Jessica Theroux spent a year traveling around Italy apprenticing with old Italian women, who shared their recipes, personal stories and secrets. The product of her travels is Cooking with Italian Grandmothers: Recipes and Stories from Tuscany to Sicily. Her book, as a result of her year on the road, is filled with stories. It’s almost like a travel log with photographs and a few recipes. Some people enjoy being involved in a cookbook almost like a novel. If you are one of those people, you will absolutely love this book. Therox travels through Italy visiting women and their families in different regions. She creates menus for us to choose from with each region, allowing room for improvising. The book is beautiful to look at and would make a great addition to any kitchen or coffee table. I must say that the recipes presented in the book are beyond authentic, and that's what I enjoyed about this cookbook. It’s because of the stories, pictures, and maps(hand drawn) that we get this sense of authenticity, which creates a feeling of realness that is hard to find in any book. This isn't a cook book that was just “put together”. A lot of time and care was put into a book that should produce delicious food and inspiring thoughts for anyone that picks it up.
